The digital world we live in is full of revolutionary technological advances that have transformed life as we know it in a staggering number of ways. Take ECommerce and Online Sales for example. Web based sales was still in the trial and error phase as a market sector twenty-five years ago, but in 2019 that market surpassed $600 billion. Leaps like that are not limited to online shopping and convenient package delivery. The Federal Reserve alone conducts over 15 trillion transactions a day, that send trillions of dollars a day to all corners of the world. Technology in hospitals prevent human mistakes before they happen, and advances in diagnostics and treatments have given millions of people another chance at life, when as recently as ten, twenty, or thirty years ago, they would be facing a very different prognosis. Right now, we are in the midst of an explosion of web based technology in our homes. The "Internet of Things" (IoT) is made up of devices that communicate using the internet. You can turn lights on and off, turn the air conditioning on before leaving work so the house is cool when you arrive, open the garage or front door for your early arriving guests, and can even see what's happening around and in your house, and the only things you need to do any of these things is an iPhone or an Android smartphone with an internet connection. You can be 5, 500, or even 5,000 miles away.
The business sector is also very involved with the ongoing technological revolution. Smartphones, tablets, laptops with wireless cards, Virtual Point Networking (VPN), audio and video communication tools, the electronic signing of legal documents, secure email, encrypted data... these things are all part of a company's life in the digital world. They allow for collaboration from great distances and have been the keystone for working offsite. In fact, so many new business applications and services have hit the market in recent years that a survey of Chief Information and Chief Technology Officers showed that many companies are finding it hard to keep pace with the best products for their industry and company needs.
With countries all over the world making web-enabled devices for both home and business use, software and firmware updates with new features constantly being rolled out, consolidation within the tech sector, and many companies rushing products to market, a significant number of doors have been left open for professional hackers to exploit. Too often, software and hardware companies learn about the weaknesses of their products when their customers report a breach.
